I began painting neurons during the first semester of my Master's degree when I learned about the role of Chandelier cells (pictured top right) in the brain. These cells are inhibitory and they connect to every neuron and interneuron around them in a way that completely quiets all cell activity for a short period regularly. The role of inhibition and oscillations in the brain are complex and fascinating subjects which continue to inspire me to research and to paint.
